The Red Ocean

Laughter and lights behind those windows.
Steps into the darkness of the corridors.
A hand reached out for the cold glass.
Fingertips kissed the surface of a window.
Brown eyes stared to the crescent shining in the sky whose color reminded her of a deep blue ocean at midnight.
Something moved in her heart as a familiar thought came to her mind.
A tear on her cheek captured the moonlight and shone like a pearl.
I will never see him again.
Strands of dark hair covered her face hidden under a mask.
More pearls ran down the white skin, fell onto the floor and burst into thousand pieces.
Never.
She knew that there was no other way anymore.
Yet something in her shattered heart hoped for a good ending.
It felt familiar, this undying hope for everything going to be alright.
A sobbing noise echoed in the corridor of darkness.
She wished there was another option, another ending, another beginning.
Time passed while a dark silhouette was leaning on the glass of the windows which reminded her of a cold night in winter. Laughter and music were to be heard from far, far away.
It was like the corridor was frozen in time.
Suddenly her hand clenched into a fist.
No.
She couldn’t cry, no, she mustn’t cry.
She had to concentrate on her task.
The only thing she could do was locking away those feelings in her heart.
Fingers ran through silk hair, loosening the sharp grip of the mask around her head.
The girl was looking at it in her hand, while silent tears left their traces behind.
A small smile curled around her lips.
The silver crescent which reminded her of days in the forgotten past blinded her and she closed her eyes, wiping off the pearls on her face.
I have to go.
Step.
Step.
Step.
Click.
The girl turned around quickly, facing the shadow behind her. Her eyes widened in shock as she recognized the silver of the gun. There was only one second till the trigger was pulled.
Only one second in which their eyes met.
Lavender found mahagony.
Loud bangs echoed in the darkness.
Bullets went through the smoke. A burning pain rose up in her head and the girl fell down, too weak to stand, while her heart hammered against her ribs, fast and painful.
A warm liquid was dropping down her face, following the traces her tears left behind. The mask fell out of her hand and broke into thousand pieces like the memories of a certain person she had held dear. Burning flames from hell rushed through her body and she gasped in pain, reaching for fresh air, but cruel blood filled her lungs. She felt wounds closing in a horrifying speed, but it was too late. The fire was everywhere, in her heart and her mind, hot, painful, bright.
She coughed and opened her eyes in shock just to see a dark shadow in front of the window, glowing in silver moonlight which was captured in her murderer’s hair.
He’s beautiful, she thought and red tears welled up in her eyes.
She wanted to cry, scream, breathe, but everything got heavier.
Quieter.
Darker.
The last thing she saw until the black fire reached her was a familiar pair of amethysts shimmering slightly in red.
Staring into the lavender orbs her lips formed a small, weak smile and she closed her eyes.
It’s over.
The darkness came silent. Painless. Cold. Its fingers crawled upon her body, drowning her into numbness and the red ocean of blood.
The last memory the girl had were the eyes of her murderer shining in an unfamiliar emotion.
Regret.
This is going to be my contest entry for :iconnostalgia-azekifc:
I chose the scenario:
The Royal Masquerade Ball is as uncomfortable and disconcerting as the princess had anticipated. Wanting to take a short break, Yuuki leaves the hall to wander other places of the mansion, where she finds..?

I hope you like it :)
